Yesterday I walked into a T-Mobile store, picked out a new Galaxy S4 and signed up for mobile service that I can leave at anytime. For once I wasn’t forced to swear a blood oath of loyalty and commit myself to two years of mobile service while locking me into the same phone or device for the next two years as well.

My bet is that within the next 18 months we see one or more of the other big three carriers follow suit in some way. T-Mobile has spent the past few years expanding and upgrading their 4G LTE network. Because T-Mobile’s network isn’t as overcrowded as Verizon and AT&T their LTE speeds are blazing fast. I live in NYC and everywhere I’ve done a speed test with T-Mobile head to head with Verizon, T-Mobile has delivered significantly faster speeds. This guy got similar results on the other side of the country in San Francisco with T-Mobile blowing Verizon out of the water.

Verizon’s claim to fame is that they have the largest 4G network in the country. I guess that might be useful if you’re a hobo riding the rails all over the country everyday but for most of us we just need a good service in the general area we live in.

When I moved into the house I’m in now I immediately saw that I was in a terrible coverage area. It wasn’t just inside my house it was all around me for a few blocks each way. I called Verizon and they said they would send someone out to drive through my neighborhood to test the network. I got a call back a couple of days later informing me that there were network issues in my area. When I asked if there was anything I could do to try and resolve the dropped calls and such they offered me a signal booster for $150. Annoyed I asked them why I should have to fork over another $150 just to get my service to work like it should already be working. They told me that they were already giving me a deal because the usual cost for the signal booster was $250. Out of curiosity when I signed up for T-Mobile I asked them about this very issue and was told if there was any issue with signal strength that they would provide a booster free of charge.

The bottom line is if you’re coming to the end of your contract on another carrier you may want to give T-Mobile a look before you jump right back into another two year commitment of the same old, same old.
