The National Coalition for Men (NCFM) has filed a lawsuit in federal court to require that, like men, women be required to sign up for the Selective Service upon turning 18.
For anyone unfamiliar with the Selective Service, they’re the ones that would implement a mandatory military draft if some serious shit went down. The last time the Selective Service was called upon in the U.S. the 1969 draft lottery during Vietnam.
When you go to the SS website one of the first things you see on their homepage is this bit of info.
Even though the Secretary of Defense has decided to allow women in combat jobs, the law has not been changed to include this. Consequently, only men are currently required to register by law with Selective Service during ages 18 thru 25. Women still do not register. (January 24, 2013)
This is exactly what the NCFM lawsuit is about.
Plaintiffs request injunctive and declaratory relief for Defendants to treat women and men equally by requiring both men and women to register for the U.S. military draft. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta’s announcement in January of 2013, lifting the ban on women serving in combat for the U.S. military, will remove the only legal impediment to requiring women to register for the draft. Plaintiffs’ allegations are based upon information and belief and upon investigation of Plaintiffs’ counsel.
I have the feeling that if shit ever gets bad enough that we need to implement the draft again we’re all going to be pretty fucked anyway.
I’m not sure why women wouldn’t want to sign up for the SS, just look at how much fun these guys are having.
What do you think of the possibility of women having to register with the Selective Service?
