This video is frightening and disturbing. It’s disturbing that the police show up and shoot a mentally ill man within seconds of arriving on the scene. It’s frightening because if you watch the video the man was complying with police orders and was absolutely motionless at the time he was shot. This could have been any one of us.

On Oct. 14, Bobby Gerald Bennett, 59, of Dallas, Texas and his mother got into an argument. Bennett, who suffers from Schizophrenia grabbed a knife and went out into the street. His mother, Joyce Jackson, called 911 and asked them to send officers trained in dealing with the mentally ill.

Rather than trying to deescalate the situation the cops arrive and immediately pull their guns and draw down on Bennett. Within seconds four shots had been fired and Bennett had been shot once in the abdomen.

According to the press release issued by Dallas police Sgt. Warren Mitchell immediately after the shooting, Bennett “made statements indicating that he was not going to cooperate with the officers” and that “the incident escalated which led an officer to fire his weapon upon the individual.”

In court documents the officers’ say that Bennett “took several steps towards them with the knife raised in an aggressive manner.” That is contradicted by eyewitnesses as well as the surveillance footage. Bennett doesn’t move a muscle before the police open fire. The police knowingly and willfully lied in court documents about shooting someone. Perjury should be added to their list of charges.

The surveillance video was captured by neighbor Maurice Bunch who can be seen on the video moments before the cops arrive talking to Bennett, even walking up and shaking his hand.

“When the officers told him freeze, he complied,” said Bunch, who witnessed the incident from his driveway across the street. “He did not move an inch, in suspended animation; he just stood there, you know? Bobby was conscious, he knew exactly what he was doing because I had been talking to him prior.”

Bunch states emphatically that the police were “trying to kill” Bennett.

Now that the surveillance footage has surfaced the Dallas police have announced that they are re-investigating the shooting. How nice of them.

We are in the very early stages of conducting a thorough criminal investigation of this incident. Once we complete the criminal investigation we will refer our findings to the Dallas County District Attorney’s office […] We will then begin the administrative investigation to determine whether our deadly force policy was violated.

Bennett is still in intensive care in a Dallas hospital. The good news is, if he survives, he should have more than enough money to get the best treatment for his condition in the world after he sues the crap out of Dallas and the Dallas police department.

This is just sickening to see our police, the people that claim to “serve and protect us”, shoot down in cold blood a mentally ill man for absolutely no reason and then get caught in a bald-faced lie trying to cover up their despicable actions. I don’t think losing their jobs should suffice in this instance. I honestly think they should be charged with attempted murder.
