We all have those orphaned batteries lying around and we can’t for the life of us remember whether we stuck them there because they were still good and we can use them later or we stuck them there because they’re dead and planned on throwing them away at some later point.

Luckily there’s a simple test that lets you determine within seconds whether or not you can toss those batteries in the bin.

Testing an alkaline battery

Find a hard surface, drop the battery, negative side down, and if it bounces it’s dead. If it absorbs the energy from the drop and doesn’t bounce the battery is still good. The video does a good job and goes into some depth explaining why exactly this happens but I don’t want to give away the ending so I’ll let you watch for yourselves.

Was anyone aware of this test? I’m definitely going to be going through my junk drawers later and testing the batteries to get rid of all the dead ones.
