You may have seen this video making its way around the internet today with Lexus claiming it’s finally created a working hoverboard. The video looks pretty convincing and I definitely want to believe. So, did they create this modern marvel? Yes and no.

The board is made with magnets and superconductor supercooled by liquid nitrogen. This allows the magnet to hold up a lot of weight as long as it stays on top of the magnetic rail. In the video, what you’re seeing is a specially built skatepark with these magnetic rails all along the course so as long as the rider stays on track the magnetic lift is enough to keep them up.

This video goes into more detail about how the hoverboard and the skatepark were built basically as a giant marketing campaign for the new line of Lexus’ coming out. Still, all in all it’s a pretty interesting concept and so far it’s as close as any of us has come to fulfilling the dream that Back to the Future planted inside all of our minds 25 years ago.
